Mildred "Mike" Louise (Shiflett) Toomer

Mildred "Mike" Louise (Shiflett) Toomer, 87, went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, January 22, 2013. She passed away at Cross Roads Assisted Living in Rifle, CO.

She was born February 17, 1925 in Richmond, VA to Pendleton and Mary Louise (Bowles) Shiflett. She grew up in Virginia and graduated from Farmville State Teachers College. She taught 1st and 2nd grade in Portsmouth.

On June 30, 1951, Mike married Livingston "Wiss" Kennedy Toomer. In 1954 they moved to Burns, Colorado to a cow camp on the Benton Ranch, high in the mountains. They raised their three sons, Jim, Bob & Tom, on the ranch. Mike taught in the one room schoolhouse in Burns, then taught in Eagle, commuting to the ranch on weekends. In 1993 when the ranch sold, they moved to Gypsum. She retired after teaching for 20 years in Colorado.

In 2010, Mike moved to Cross Roads Assisted living. She thoroughly enjoyed her time there and greatly appreciated their loving care.

She was preceded in death by her husband Wiss; her three brothers Bobby, Pendleton and Thomas; and her sister "Shippy".

She leaves behind her three sons, James (Kathy), Robert (Penny) and Tom (Linda); ten grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held at the Eagle Baptist Church on Tuesday, January 29. Interment was at Cedar Hill Cemetery in Gypsum.
