Obituary for David G. Kehr

David G. Kehr
1/30/1919 ~ 9/1/2012

David G. Kehr, 93, of Rifle died September 1, 2012, at home of natural causes. He was born on January 30, 1919, on the family farm near Villisca, Iowa to Florence L. (Dunn) and Frank B. Kehr. In 1936 he graduated from high school in Linn, Missouri. After graduation, he worked at many farming and ranching jobs in Iowa and Missouri, and followed the grain and potato harvest to Idaho and Washington. He also served in the Civilian Conservation Corps in Minnesota where he earned $21.50 per month. After a short stint with the Union Pacific Railroad in Las Vegas, Nevada, he returned to Iowa in 1943 to join the Army. He served as an armorer/waist gunner on a B-17 during World War II with the Army Air Cops, reaching the rank of Staff Sergeant.

On March 24, 1943, he married Margueritte (Marge) Gray in the Chapel at Camp Chaffee, Texas. After his discharge in 1945, he worked at various farming and ranching jobs in Colorado. In November 1951, he began his career with Public Service Company (now Xcel Energy) in Brighton, Colorado; transferring to Rifle in 1961 where he retired in March 1979.

After Marge died in 1991 he continued to "snowbird" in Arizona. He married Frances Stockton in October 1996. Frances died in 2006. During his life he enjoyed many activities including camping, fishing, hunting, and traveling. His passions later in life were his vegetable and flower gardens. He loved to write poetry and sent romantic poetry to his wife during WWII. Later he wrote humorous poems like Jimmy Jones First Day at School. He loved his wildlife friends including the birds, but not magpies; the deer and elk, but not skunks & raccoons; the fox family, but not the bear that ate his chickens. But most of all he loved family and friends and was 'Grandpa' to many.

David was a loving father and husband; he is survived by his son Harold (Linda) Kehr of Idaho Fall, Idaho; daughters Martha (Vernon) Murray and Linda (Gale) Upton both of Rifle; five grandchildren; eleven great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and two sisters.

He was preceded in death by a brother and three sisters.

Visitation is scheduled for Saturday, August 8, 12-2 pm at Rifle Funeral Home. Funeral Services will begin at 2 pm. Interment with Military Honors will follow immediately at Rose Hill Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers the family suggests donations to the Rifle Senior Center.
