Obituary for Helen Louise Harrington

Helen Louise Harrington
Helen Louise Harrington passed away January 13, 2014 at E. Dene Moore Care Center in Rifle, Colorado. She was 91. Helen was born in Red Wing, Minnesota on July 9, 1922 to Fredrick Saupe and Josephine Hendle. Helen married Rolland L. Harrington in Las Vegas, Nevada on October 26, 1951. They had a daughter, Maria.
Helen took a correspondents course from Art Instruction, Inc. in Minneapolis, Minnesota, along with the peanuts cartoonist Charles Schultz. After her course, she went to work for the Red Wing Potteries where she was the first female artist to paint dinnerware. After marrying Rolland Harrington in Las Vegas Nevada, they relocated Pagosa Springs, Colorado to open a filling station. After sometime, they relocated to Englewood, Colorado to open another filling station. While in Englewood, Helen went to work for the May-Daniels & Fisher Company in downtown Denver to begin her career as an illustrator. For many years Coloradans viewed her work weekly in the advertising ads of May - Daniels & Fisher. In 1985, Helen was the last illustrator to retire from the May - Daniels & Fisher when photography was introduced into advertising. Additionally, her graphic arts work was published in the November 15, 1970 edition of Vogue Magazine.
In 1986, Helen retired to Battlement Mesa.
Helen enjoyed painting with water color being her favorite medium. When not painting Helen spent all her time with her daughter and her two grandchildren.
She is survived by her daughter, Maria Ford; her two grandchildren, Adam L Ford and Amber M Ford; a sister, Jean Harrington; numerous wonderful nieces and nephews; and her dog Rascal and great grand dog Mary Jane. Services will be held Tuesday, January 28, 2014 at 11:00 am at the Grand Valley Methodist Church in Parachute, Colorado.
